GAP in December?

I'm planning to leave from southeastern Michigan in late December and ride all the way to DC. Is that possible? Has anyone ridden the GAP in the winter? I have a pretty decent cross bike and have ridden multi-day, long distance rides before. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Please note that the Big Savage Tunnel along the GAP Trail is always closed from Dec. 1 through April 10. The GAP Trail is wonderful, but I wouldn't advise it during winter. A lot of it runs through a snow belt. Here's some info.
