Shuttle from Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh

Does anyone know of a shuttle service from D.C. to Pittsburgh? Just called Amtrak and they do not allow bikes.

It was my impression that amtrak allowed bikes onboard as checked baggage. I rode GAP/C&O to D.C. this summer and that was policy at the time. Maybe another call to amtrak, another agent, would clarify?

Sorry, need to clarify last post: amtrak's policy was to allow bikes in baggage, in approved bike box IF you are ticketed to a stop staffed by union baggage agents. I.e. bikes not allowed to Cumberland MD, because stop is not staffed by amtrak bag handlers. Union rules prohibit anyone but union bag handlers from unloading from the train bag car; according to amtrak onboard staff as of 6/2012.

Roy, you did do a good job of keeping your opin out of your comment. But the larger picture is that Amtrak is not moving forward fast enough for a roll on service program on that particular train.

Send me an email and I can forward some info. THe bike shop in Hancock has about the best prices and can shuttle up to 6 bikes.

Until a friend offered to drive me to PGH, my plan was to ship my bike via FedEx Ground to a bike shope in PGH -- let them reassemble/check over and go from there. This also would have eliminated the ridiculously long Amtrak ride to PGH...b/c I could get there several hours less travel time by bus and at a more Christian hour than midnight (Amtrak's only bike-carrying train to PGH). Worth considering.

Contact your Representative and Senator in Congress and give them an ear full about not being able to stow your bike on AMTRK. The only way this bloated government agency is going to put a baggage agent in Cumberland is if someone from Washington DC twist their pathetic arm. Another solution is to let bicyclist stow their machines in one of the lower level compartments that the crew use to “lounge around” for the three and half hour trek from either Pittsburg or Washington DC for a nominal fee. Simple solutions for bureaucratic morons!

If enough people complain as Swagman suggest, maybe something can be done to allow bikes on the Capital Limited. If you want to ride the Katy Trail in Mo., Amtrak permits roll on bikes on the Missouri River Runner from St. Louis to Sedalia. So it can be done.
