I'm trying to determine if the entire route is paved or not. I would like to ride my road bike the entire length this summer west to east and have heard that all is paved except for a 12 mile stesch? Is this true? if so is there a paved rout around this? If not how much is pave and how much is not?

If you are asking if the C&O and GAP are paved the answer is no. I would not recommend a road bike on the C&O. I think you would be safe to use a road bike on the GAP if you had to.
