I'll be bike camping along the GAP next month and will be making the return trip via Amtrak at Pittsburgh. Question is, how will I need to handle certain camping items like knives, stoves and stove fuel? Is all that stuff scanned or checked like at the airport? Can I just get by with it all in my panniers as long as I don't mention it? Much appreciated!

Nothing is scanned or checked like airlines. However, technically "Incendiaries, including but not limited to flammable gases, liquids, fuels, fireworks and other explosive devices" are prohibited." If it were me and I absolutely had to take the fuel home with me, I would make sure it could not leak and go for it.

I'm planning a thru ride from Pittsburg to DC mid Oct. I spoke to an Amtrak Customer Service person and was told no problem bringing a fuel canister aboard. Didn't think to ask about pocket knife. If your concerned there is an REI in Pittsburg. I think it's near Smithfield Bridge?

I took a pocketknife through the gate Sept 8 in DC Union Station. No one even suggested searching my gear.
