Hi All,

I am looking for advice on deciding the route of my first long walk/hike. I'm only debating the starting location because I live in Hancock, Md. so my ending point is locked in. I want to do a 2-day, 1-night hike/walk that is between 25-40 miles total with an overnight primitive style camp somewhere along the route (sleeping in a hammock under a tarp). I plan to be dropped off on a Friday morning and then pretty much walk to my house in Hancock and expecting to get home sometime in the evening on Saturday.

Although I consider myself to be in decent shape, I've been "training" for the walk portion for about 6 months by walking 2.5 miles every day on my lunchbreak, and 1 or 2 times a month I walk 10 - 12 miles with about 10 lbs. of gear on me in about 3 - 3.5 hours. Which is about the pace and weight of gear I plan on bringing.

As for the route advice, I am thinking about doing a Paw Paw Wv. - Hancock, Md. trip with camping in Little Orleans, Md. Total distance is 32 miles. Day 1 starts in Paw Paw and will be 15.6 Miles to Little Orleans where I will stop and set up a small camp for overnight. Then, waking up and walking the remainder of the 16.4 miles to Hancock, and then probably another 1.5 miles to my house from the trail.

Does anyone have a different route of about the same distance and ending point?

Does this seem to be to too ambitious or too conservative for a first-time long walk/hike?

Any advice at all? I feel like I'm just getting started, but I'm not a novice at walking long distances or with camping, but with the walking and camping together?

An obvious alternative route would be south of Hancock beginning in Williamsport. It’s a slightly shorter route (25 + 1.5) than the one you proffered There is an overnight campgound about halfway at the Fort Frederick State Park. Having not stayed there, I don’t know if it can accomodate a hammock.

I’ll add some further comments later.

Rivnuts from Homestead, PA on 02/13/25 3:02:07 PM
If you wish a somewhat longer trek, you could start a little further south beginning at the McMahon's Mill Recreation Area (approximately 36.5 miles south of Hancock) or even at Dam 4 (40 miles south) and return to Hancock. From there you could ovenight camp at McCoy's Landing State Campground (public pay) or the North Mountain primitive Hiker/Biker campsite.

I'm a biker not a hiker so I can't comment on the feasibility of your first hiking/camping adventure. Its easily done of course in one day on a bike.

I would note that there was a bridge over a creek out on the Towpath north of Hancock last summer. You may well be able to find a way to hike around it successfully. Alternatively, you can circumvent that bridge by hiking northbound on the parallel Western Maryland Rail Trail.

Don't forget some bug repellent for those pesky mosquitos that seem to come out at dusk. Also there's little or no opportunity to obtain water in these areas so plan on taking what you may need or a filter to make some along the way.

HumanPowerTool_321 from Hancock, Md on 03/10/25 3:01:53 PM
Thank you for the information and alternate route suggestions Rivnuts. I didn't really consider coming to Hancock from the Georgetown side of the trail. I like to wake up and walk into the sunrise so west to east routes was all I looked at (for this first trip anyway).

I think I've decided to start in either Town Hill and walk to Hancock. Not much of a difference between them, like 5-6 miles I believe. But if I start in TH, I will be about 18 miles to Devils Alley Bike/Hike campsite for the night and it is about halfway to Hancock. If I did PP to Hancock, my halfway/camp option is one of the options in Little Orleans. I have camped there dozens of times and want to see things I haven't see/camped before while on this trip. Plus, if my start point for day 2 is around Devils Alley, it should be a beautiful sunrise if I hike up to the top of the hill to get to Point Lookout Overlook.

Similar issue with the Williamsport to Hancock route you suggested. I love that area and the idea, but I have camped at Fort Frederick a handful of times over the years.

You seem to know a good bit about the trail which I greatly appreciate. Thank you for the advice. There's three things I consider as essential and separate from "gear", they are a knife, a lighter, and a LifeStraw water filter straw. Outside of an emergency, I think I could take those 3 items make it home alright. Might suck for two days, but I'd make it.

The GAP is maintained by a group of volunteer trail associations for the most part. The C&O is maintained by the National Park Service. The effect, if any, of federal government efficiency actions on the C&O is not clear at this point.

I don’t intend to be a smart Alec but if you find one, let us all know as I have never found one, especially in the Georgetown district where the trail ends. Once, I did find a reasonably priced one-room Airbnb for myself about 6 miles north of the train station but it was less expensive since it was a fair distance from downtown and in a questionable neighborhood.

For a few years I was able to stay with my daughter in the Kolorama neighborhood but she moved from there a few years ago.

Simply put the odds aren’t with you for an enjoyable ride on the unpaved C&O Trail. You may want to consider one of the paved alternative trails in and about DC such as Custis Trail, WOD Trail, Capital Crescent Trail or Mt.Vernon Trail.

Roadie Mike from Detroit MI:

Hopefully you find this additional forum message since the forum app would not allow me to respond directly to your message as it normally does.

The Paw Paw Tunnel for the C&O Canal was cut through a hill/mountain rather than continue along the winding Potomac River to save time and cost of construction by reducing the length of the canal. - Neither objective was ultimately achieved. The 3,118 foot long tunnel itself was cut through the shale mountain and built over a period of 14 years. If you look at a map of the trail you'll see the divergence of this canal tunnel from the Potomac River. Further some Google searching will reveal a number of excellent websites describing the history and facts for the tunnel itself.

The outdoor trails entering and leaving the tunnel can be muddy during and following rain. The trail immediately downriver (north) of the tunnel can be slippery as well as muddy as it travels over a wooden "footbridge" adjacent a rock wall outside the tunnel. Just beyond the footbridge the trail surface includes exposed sections of wet shale as well as the muddy earthen surface. It's all rideable under those conditions but extra caution is well advised.

Inside the tunnel the elevated towpath travels between a guardrail separating the towpath from the canal so you don't fall off into the canal. The towpath within is a hard earthen surface about 5- to 6-feet wide. You can readily walk a pannier-laden bike within this width.

However, the surface is rough and damp including some small puddles in the ruts due to leaks in the tunnel roof. It is very dark inside making a light a virtual necessity. While I've encountered riders attempting to ride through the tunnel without a light, they present a peril for themselves as well as others in the tunnel.

I hope this message answers your questions.

Will a trike (actually a trike to quad conversion, 40” wide) fit between the wall and railing? Thanks!

Rivnuts from Homestead, PA on 02/12/25 7:32:58 PM
The 40-inch width of the trike would fit between the wall and the rail as the towpath width inside the tunnel is 5 feet. There are a few related concerns however.

The first is your transiting through the tunnel. Even with ten trips through that tunnel over the past ten years I’ve never seen a trike pass through the tunnel. I think that’s more due to the nature of the towpath before and after the towpath rather than within the tunnel itself. The trail to and from the tunnel looks like a path traveled by a car. That is, two separated single tracks such that one wheel of a trike would normally ride in one of the tracks while the other would ride in the median…doable but not ideal for a trike or a two-wheeled trailer. But I digress.

Secondly, while you likely could ride through the tunnel, there wouldn’t be a whole lot of clearance beyond your wheels making a good light a virtual necessity. Also, with the limited clearance, passing other bikers inside the tunnel would be challenging. I’d certainly wait until other cyclists or pedestrians had cleared the tunnel before beginning to go through.

Lastly, if you chose not to ride through the tunnel but, rather, walk through, pushing or pulling a trike through would be awkward I would think.

Hopefully others with trikes can offer their thoughts as well.

Rivnuts from Homestead, PA on 01/31/25 4:31:45 PM
I have not stayed at the Harper’s Ferry Adventure Campground so I can’t comment on its accommodations or amenities. However, I would comment that it is not an “easy” place to get to on a bike depending on your fitness and your confidence on riding on active, fast travelling, 2-lane highways, i.e Rt 340 off which the Adventure Center is located. Using Google Maps you can see two routes to the campground from the C&O Trail both of which include riding along a stretch of Rt 340 and have one or two steep climbs rising up out of the Potomac River valley. Both routes require that you cross the river from the C&O Trail. The first route requires that you carry your bike and gear up the steel stairs aside the train tressel into Harper’s Ferry to continue on toward Rt 340. The second route crosses the river on Rt 340 itself.

I’ve stayed at a hotel on the Maryland side of the river and at a bed and breakfast in Harper’s Ferry itself. Neither were partcularly great, but served the purpose for one night once getting there.

If you have not already done so, you can use this Bikecando.com website to identify various accommodations in the Harpers Ferry area that might be of interest. I would also note that there is a pay-to-stay campground immediately adjacent to the C&O Trail in Brunswick, MD about 7 miles east of Harper’s Ferry. Aside from the nearby noisy railroad operations, it is an alternative to camping at Harpers Ferry.

Luchs from Harpers Ferry on 02/01/25 2:35:32 PM
What Rivnuts said. You would be better off staying in Brunswick, Harpers Ferry, or Sheapherdstown if you don't want to camp.

My brother and I are biking the GAP and C&O trails in May. My bike has lollipop clip pedals. What is the consensus as to whether those are good for these trails or whether I would be better off with regular pedals to be able to put my feet down faster if I need to?

Rvnuts from Homestead, PA on 01/29/25 7:58:38 PM
Under dry conditions and assuming one is experienced riding with clipless pedals, you should be able to ride these trails without issue with those pedals. Under wet conditions you should still be ok with clipless pedals on the GAP Trail. Wet conditions on the C&O could be problematic with clipless pedals since that trail can be slippery and muddy, especially between Cumberland and Little Orleans.

However, in full disclosure, I don’t ride with clipless pedals so that my opinion might be overly cautious. If you.mountain bike with clip less pedals, I would expect you’d be fine using them on these trails.

That’s my two cents worth. Others may offer different opinions.

Well, it’s been a few years since I stayed there although it was less than 10 years ago. My friend and I stayed there one night after riding from Cumberland. It is well off and quite uphill from the trail but not an issue as they offered a shuttle from the trail to the inn for us and our bikes. The inn older but well maintained and comfortable. The food was good including their signature tomato pie. At that time it was owned and operated by a chap named Dave although he was going to retire and leave the operation to his daughter as I recall. Of interest, there was quite a view from the elevation at the inn. You’ll find more reviews at the Inn’s website. Note you have few, if any, options for overnight indoor stay between Cumberland and Hancock.

Hopefully, someone who has stayed there more recently can provide additional contemporary feedback.

Also i was wondering if you had any bike rental suggestions that are the most financially reasonable, and transportation from Cumberland back to Georgetown?

I don't know Washington well enough to comment knowledgably on available, multi-overnight parking.

You might try Wheelzup Adventures for both rentals and shuttle. Of course there are others. For other potential shuttle services from Cumberland to Washington, Google the following for sources and costs:

"bike shuttles from Cumberland md to Washington DC"

I'm sure that others more familiar with the Washington biking community can offer other suggestions.

Hello,
Sorry to ask (again) a common question.

I am planning my PIT-IAD solo ride in Jul/Aug 2025.
I live in Europe, I am used to cyclotourism here but this will be my first riding experience in the USA.

I will land in either airport from Europe and then cycle the 330miles (ideally from PIT to IAD)

Any good advice about the best place in those two towns to rent a ONE WAY gravel/hybrid bike ?
I have seen a few sites already but they look very expensive and with many one way restrictions...
Many TIA

Rivnuts from Homestead, PA on 01/01/25 4:35:42 PM
Golden Triangle Bike Rental is, perhaps, the best known and most prominent bike rental companies in Pittsburgh. They are commonly used by cyclists making the trip between and Pittsburgh and Washington, DC. They usually have a late model, durable fleet of rental bikes and bags for those making the trip.

I can’t speak to their rental costs or how they compare to other possible rental companies.

For info,I have no affiliation or relationship with Golden Triangle Bike Rental.

Many Thanks Rivnuts.
I’ll them a try then.

Fred from Baltimore on 01/02/25 10:39:08 PM
You should know that IAD (Dulles Airport) is a good distance from the center of Washington, DC. If you want to ride the full GAP/C&O, you will end in Washington. If you can find a one-way rental, it will probably work out that you leave the bike in Washington itself. You can get to IAD by the Metro.
I suspect from your note that you will fly into Pittsburgh. There are trails to get from Pittsburgh's airport to the GAP, although you would actually miss Pittsburgh itself and connect to the GAP a little further down the trail. The Montour Trail makes up most (or all) of this connection. However, since you are arriving without a bike that is all rather academic. Other folks can advise you how to get from the airport to Pittsburgh itself.
Enjoy the trip ! These are great trails.

Rivnuts from Homestead, PA on 01/03/25 11:07:14 AM
The bike drop off location for a one-way bike rental from Pittsburgh to DC using the Golden Triangle Bike Rental service is at Maine Ave SW in DC which is about 3 miles from the end of the C&O Towpath Trail at Milepost 0 behind the Thompson Boat Center.

As you might expect there are a few ways to get from the Pittsburgh Airport to Downtown Pittsburgh. Cabs/ride services (ZTrip, Uber, Lyft) are available. However, the least expensive way to make the trip is using public transportation via the Pittsburgh Regional Transport's 28X bus shuttle. It runs twice an hour, from 4 am until midnight, seven days a week. It costs only $2.75 one way. Tickets can be purchased in the airport baggage claim area.

Good friends,
I believe that the latest edition of TrailGuide is the 20th edition. Can anyone tell me what year the 20th edition was published ? And do we know if a new edition will be published in 2025 ?
It is a fantastic book. My thanks to the folks behind it. And my thanks to all those who share their wisdom and experience in this forum.

Rivnuts from Homestead, PA on 01/03/25 10:38:49 AM
My short answer to your question is "I, myself, don't know" if a new edition will be released in 2025. You are correct in that the latest edition is the 20th Edition offered for sale at many outlets.
That said the current edition was copyrighted in 2023. I find the 10th edition was released circa 2013, suggesting a new edition approximately every two years or so.

To get a definitive answer to your question I would suggest you contact those that publish and distribute the Trail Guide at

admin@gaptrail.org
GAPtrailstore@comcast.net

to find out if a new edition is soon to be published.

If this is your first trip down the trail, you might enjoy another publication as well:

The Great Allegheny Trail Companion by Bill Metzger

This book describes the trail, its history, features, geology, fauna etc. It provides a wealth of information that will allow you to enjoy the trip even more. It does not contain ads for places to stay, eat or visit however. It also is available from the GAP Trail Store site.

Lastly, I think you'll find this website itself to provide much of the information necessary to plan your trip including the trail map, mileage chart, towns and services, etc. if you page through those tabs.

Best wishes for a safe and enjoyable tri.

Rivnuts from Homestead,PA on 12/15/24 9:45:53 PM
The typical daily high in early June in Pittsburgh is in the mid to high 70’s with a typical daily low in the mid to high 50’s. It will generally be somewhat cooler at the higher elevations approaching the Easter Continental Divide, e.g. Meyersdale PA and warmer as you travel south beyond there. On any given day there is a typical 41% chance of some precipitation. Check out the data at www.weather.gov site for this and more weather info.

All the discrete free and pay-to-stay campsites are open at that time. You’ll want to review all the available campsites and there amenities to plan your overnight stays to match your itinerary. This site and the GAP and C&O Travel Guide book identify those sites.

If you need more info, just post a message.

The first campground (Swains Lock) on the trail is 17 miles from the end of the C&O and add another 3 to downtown. It’s doable but a rather long commute. Staying closer to town would be more convenient. Hotels are expensive but with some investigation and planning, you can find an AirBnB in the form of a room in a house for much less. Typically such places have a place to secure your bike and gear. You may not be immediately downtown but can usually use public transportation to get there. You’ll want to be cautious what part of town you stay in but you can assess the various neighborhoods with some research.

I did this successfully a couple of years ago. Just my two cents worth.

See announcement below from Amtrak regarding merging of its Capital Limited and Silver Star routes.

Beginning November 10, 2024, Amtrak will temporarily combine its Capitol Limited (Chicago to Washington D.C.) and Silver Star (Washington D.C. to Miami) routes to create the Floridian. The Floridian (trains 40/41) will operate on a similar schedule, make the current stops, and follow the same tracks used by the Capitol Limited (trains 29/30) among Pittsburgh, Connellsville, Cumberland, Harpers Ferry, and Washington, D.C., preserving the option of return trips for travelers along Great Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal Towpath. So if you’re seeking to book a trip on the Capitol Limited after November 10, look instead on Amtrak’s website for the Floridian.

I'm planning a month long ride from Cumberland to Georgetown and back to Cumberland, possibly around beginning of April, and have two questions(more will come soon I'm sure).

What can I expect of weather for the month of April in terms of cold vs warm?

Is there an area in Cumberland that I can park my car for a month without the risk of it being towed?

I know I could complete a back and forth trip in a week, but I'm in no rush, and I'm considering trying to camp at every hiker/biker campsite (skipping the drive ins) in one run. I know that scenario is near impossible unless I only ride 8 to 12 miles a day, and skip every other campsite.

So far, that's my plan. I'm sure it'll change between now and then.

Hey 2025 rider:

Check with the Fairfield Inn people in Cumberland. Nice place. There is a bike shop on the boardwalk nearby as well. The proprietor may have some ideas about parking. A copuple of bike shops in town as a matter of fact. April might be a good time to ride.

Regarding the weather, I’ve responded previously that I believe May is a better time for such a trip. Limiting your trip to the C&O versus the GAP reduces your risk of encountering some quite cold weather. Race could be an issue however over the course of a month.

There is free, public parking under the overhead highway near Canal Place in Cumberland.

When I went through there in August, there was indeed a bridge out on The C&O. I jumped up onto the WMRT to get past that bridge. I did not incur any stairs there.

Good afternoon, dear friends.
When I book a train from Washington to Connellsville I am given the option to add a bicycle. In the past, roll-on, roll-off service was available only where there was baggage service. There are no Amtrak humans at Connellsville, as I understand it. Perhaps the roll-off service is nonetheless available at "COV" because no local Amtrak personnel are needed - only a person on the train to hand the bike down to me.
Can anyone confirm that the roll-off service is available at Connellsville ?
Thanks.

Rivnuts from Homestead, PA on 10/20/24 8:48:55 PM
Pittsburgers often take the train to Connellsville with their bikes and ride back to the 'Burgh so roll-on/roll-off service is available there as far as I know. You can call Amtrak to confirm however for your peace of mind.

Fred from Baltimore on 10/20/24 11:26:06 PM
Thanks, Rivnuts. That is the confirmation I was looking for. Unfortunately, when I called Amtrak the agent looked at the same booking program that I had looked at and said, "If they let you add a bicycle to your reservation, then it must be possible."

Rivnuts from Homestead, PA on 10/22/24 7:16:47 PM
I agree that if the Amtrak reservation system allows you to add a bicycle reservation for your selected route, then the origin and destination stations support bicycle loading and retrieval.

However, the converse is not true. That is, if the Amtrak reservation system does not offer a bicycle reservation on your chosen route and day it doesn't necessarily mean that bikes are not supported at the origin and destination stations. It may simply mean that there are no more bicycle reservations available on that day.
