J-Rider from VA/DC on 07/24/2018 03:22 PM
We rode Pitt to DC a few weeks ago. Washout was significant. Some people say walk along tracks, but it's very steep to bring a bike and 5 min after we arrived a train came thru. There is a way across though, if you walk down slight hill from washout to stream, you can walk your bike across, jumping from rock to rock and make it with dry shoes (I did), then push bike up muddy hill. Total time- < 10 min. Stream only 25 ft across and rocks are close together to pull it off.

Jeff from Ranson WV on 07/24/2018 07:00 PM
We were there this past weekend. J-Rider described it well. The washout is passable on foot, but it may be dicey with a bicycle, especially if the water is a little higher like it might be after the recent rains. Regular shoes and a light bike would be easier than cleats and a fully-packed bike. We'll be doing the ride on a tandem and there's no good way to get that across the water. There are train tracks nearby that cross the washout, but if a train comes there's no good way to get off the tracks, and the tracks are up a short gravel slope - not recommended.

There isn't an official marked road detour, but if you do go on the roads around the washout it's about a 7 mile or so ride (to get you around maybe 4.5 miles of trail), hilly, with some sections curvy and 55mph with no shoulder.

Check with the bike shop in Brunswick MD to see about shuttles, I did see one operating when we were there.

My 14 yr. old son and I simply pushed our bikes around via the railroad tracks. Was not dangerous at all. Not a big deal.

Walked on tracks?? Dangerous. Bad Idea!!!!

tl from robinson twp (pgh) on 08/01/2018 07:54 AM
It appears on google-earth that the rail line closest to the canal is only a local siding track and doesn't carry main line, high speed trains. This should be a lot safer than taking the road which I hear is super dangerous. Also, taking the shuttle might be a good alternative for some, but it somewhat destroys the "I did the whole trip" mentality that's stuck in my head.

I am planning a Pgh to DC ride in mid-September. I'm hoping the trail will be a bit drier than earlier. I have a new pair of Continnental GatorSkin 25 mm tires on my road bike. I ride often on the NCR trail and have no difficulty with occasional mud. Any feedback about whether or not these tires will pose a problem on the C&O portion would be appreciated. I understand that the surface on the GAP portion should be much more of a sure thing. Thanks!

Richard from Washington on 07/31/2018 12:06 PM
I rode the Edwards Ferry to Seneca section last weekend. There were lots of mud holes. I had a mountain bike and went right through them although the bike slewed a bit. But I saw people with what I'd guess were 25 mm tires going through the mud holes too. The path beneath an inch or so of mud and water seemed firm, so unless there are torrential rains in September, I'd think you'd be okay.

We're going to get off the trail at White's Ferry and take Rt. 15 to Leesburg, cross river and ride the paved trail into DC. Any tips prior to this would be much appreciated!

Ocala Jim from ocala,Fl on 07/24/2018 03:02 PM
If you stay at the Best Western in Leesburg they will pick you up at the Va. side of the ferry.
I did this after biking 1 day from DC. and then had to cancel the rest of the trip because of the flood in May.

C&O Canal proposes towpath rehabilitation between McMahon's Mill and Lock 42

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park plans to rehabilitate the park's towpath from McMahon's Mill to Lock 42 in Williamsport to better protect that section of the towpath from flooding.

Park officials said in a news release that the plan is to stabilize and raise the level of the towpath and a retaining wall along the section of it to lessen the impact of flooding.

The roughly one-mile section of the towpath consistently is under water during river flooding, which causes damage along the canal and requires pedestrian and bicycle detours, the release said.

Park officials will host an open house Monday, July 23, at their headquarters at 1850 Dual Highway to gather public input on the project.

The open house will give residents a chance to learn more about the project, and they also will be able to offer ideas, concerns and potential topics for consideration as the National Park Service works on the project, the release said.

The park is accepting public comments through Friday, Aug. 10. Besides offering input at the open house, residents may submit comments online through the Planning, Environment and Public Comment website at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/choh.

Comments also may be mailed to Kevin Brandt, Superintendent, C&O Canal National Historical Park, ATTN: McMahon's Mill Towpath Improvements, 1850 Dual Highway, Suite 100, Hagerstown, MD 21740.

After analysis of the comments, the park service will prepare an environmental assessment for the project, which will be made available for a 30-day public-review period.

My kids (14 and 19) and I just rode the C&O from Cumberland to Harpers Ferry on June 29-July 3, having done the GAP. The trail was pretty well dried out, with paste-like mud in spots. It's much more varied in texture than the GAP, and prettier scenery, but be careful if you pull off next to spots on the canal with standing water, since it will be a mosquito fest. We sprayed deep woods off every morning, and it seemed to work. Also, there is a marked detour between MP-88 and MP-89, which the NPS says is 3.1 miles. We went ahead and stayed on the towpath, and there are two sections where you have to walk your bike over 6-inch sized stones. There was a detour also at Williamsport, which was fortunate for us, since we were staying there anyway. The detour takes you through town.

Ray from Ohio on 07/09/2018 12:06 PM
finished i DC on 7-4-18 Gap is all good, C&O PAW PAW tunnel was open , don't take detour at mp-88 stay on trail you don't want to miss this section along river. Walked bikes up to rail line to get passed washout near Brunswick wasn't hard, everyone we talked to said roads were too dangerous. Mud on tow-path was tacky in spots but not real bad. was 98 degrees all week that was the hardest part.

Eirik Harteis from Taylorstown on 07/13/2018 12:44 PM
I was just out on the towpath this morning. Culvert 82 (below Brunswick) is still out. There has been no work done on it. Three bikers were trying to get around by crossing the creek below the culvert. There were dealing with a great deal of water and mud. Above the culvert is a railroad bridge. There is little extra room if you choose to walk along the railroad tracks. I echo those who say taking the detour and biking the road is not a good option due to safety and hills. Whatever route you take, be careful and give yourself extra time.

Christopher from Toronto on 07/13/2018 06:06 PM
We biked from Cumberland to Leesburg with 2 kids over many days from Sunday the 7th through the 12th, detouring around, 88, 89 was not needed, as only had to walk a few yards over stones (they were working on it as we passed). The closure at Brunswick did require a walk over stones on the side away from the rail. Thanks to Greg from 2 wheel escapes, who did not want to take our money, and assured us we could do it, an honest fellow. We did have to walk across stones, but our 9 year old and 10 year old did it easily, actually seemed easier and safer then the rails.
Trail did have some muddy spots, but no real issues.

Stephen from Jamestown,NC on 06/28/2018 07:49 AM
Just finished the GAP/C&O last week. The C&O was muddy, not impassable but close. We ignored the baracades and closure signs and trudged on thru sometimes in ankle deep mud, one section being close to a mile. Wish I could remember where that section was but can't recall, between Hancock and Harpers Ferry I think. There's a bridge out just east of Brunswick. We made our way up onto the railroad tracks and walked about a mile before finding a decent place to cross back down on to the towpath. Most trees were cleared, only three or four times did we have to dismount and crawl our way over a tree. There were crews cleaning up the mess but I will say that it'll be some time before the deeper areas of mud will be solid enough to ride thru. Just be prepared to do a little walking and don't be afraid of getting dirty/muddy. We took to hardsurface roads for about 5-6 miles close to Sharpsburg. Don't know if we saved any time or not since the detour added a couple of miles. I think we needed a break from wading thru the muck. Anyway, it was indeed an adventure, fun but muddy. I say go for it! Hope this helps.

JK on 06/28/2018 08:12 AM
Walked on the railroad tracks????? That seems very dangerous. Those Brunswick trains run frequently.

SVW from Asheville, NC on 06/28/2018 09:38 AM
We encountered rough conditions. GAP is perfect, but C&O after Williamsport is very rough and closed in Brunswick. We absolutely did not take the tracks because the amtraks are fast and we have a toddler with us. There were also reports of rangers turning people away that were trying to take the tracks. We used this awesome guy Greg as a shuttle. He runs 2 Wheel Escapes, has a huge trailer, and gave us an excellent price. He is super awesome and friendly and fair. We felt like some of the other shuttles were expensive and taking advantage of the trail conditions and overcharging. Call Greg! 240-674-7626

re: type of bike
Two of us rode gravel bikes, road bikes with disc brakes and knobby tires. 35-38mm tires. with panniers, frame packs. One of us rode a dual sport, hybrid/mtb cross and it worked ok but by the end of the trip he was wishing he had brought a gravel bike. Main thing are tires. Wide is good but not too wide. 35-45cm wide is ideal IMO.

Stephen from Jamestown,NC on 06/28/2018 09:40 PM
re: train tracks
Yea, we weren't all hyped about walking the rails. Fast trains plus it's illegal. Fortunately we had no issues. I'll admit it took all three of us to get the bikes up and down the steep embankments along the railbeds.
It was an adventure!

Gary from Charlotte on 06/29/2018 08:50 AM
Eileen - I am leaving CLT Saturday AM and driving to Connellsville, PA. Always nice to have someone to talk to on 7 hour drive.

I just finished cycling the c&o trail. The trail is in very bad condition and the detours kept pulling up. There are now 2 detours near Williamsport that are all hills. The mud still on the trail and people still falling from their bikes. The trail is full of potholes and trees still down. I got many help from many Samaritans on trail and they were all specials. I had a lot fun riding the c&o but I hope I don’t need to make this ride again. But, if you want to try go for it!??????

JD on 07/06/2018 07:51 PM
Currently in Cumberland debating tackling the C&O trail tomorrow morning but getting mixed reviews of trail conditions. Ivonete, honestly how bad was it?

Is there a computer expert that is also a bike rider that would be willing to create a search engine for this site? The same questions get repeated over and over again and it would be great though see all the answers.

About a year ago I had a friend who wrote a program to download every comment comment from that a forum and then I was able to search for “tires”.

But there must be an easy way or there is a way to search this forum and I cannot fogire our how to do it.

Ray (webmaster) on 07/02/2018 04:14 PM
Thank you for asking!

I actually have Google's search built into a different website that I run (for the Katy Trail - http://www.bikekatytrail.com/search.aspx), and I'm not sure why I never added that search feature to the C&O/GAP site.

Give me a day or two, and I'll get Google Search added in, and will post something here when it's ready.

Thanks for the great suggestion.

This would be a great idea. Looking forward to it Ray! Best wishes.

Search feature added to website: you'll now notice a "Search" link in the top menu (just under the map above), plus in the links across the bottom of each page.

Thanks again for the suggestion! Happy trails!

Hello All

Ok for starters I'm definitely not a cycling expert. I just got into it this year and have been taking rides of 20-30 miles.

My question is what type of bike I need for the C&O trail? I currently have a 2018 Giant Escape 2 Hybrid bicycle. It's great for the paths (sligo creek and capital crescent) but do I need something more durable for this trip? Something more like a trail bike or mountain bike?

Reviews seem to suggest a hybrid bike would be ok, but I just want to make sure I'm not being crazy given my amateur status. I'm looking at doing the C&O ride in October.

All comments welcome. Thanks.

david gorman from hollidaysburg on 07/02/2018 11:30 AM
I believe that a hybrid bike would be fine but would want to make sure that your tires will be able to handle the trail on the C & O Trail, especially with the weather that we have been having. Something better than the normal "street" tires that may be on your bike.

Richard from Bethesda on 07/02/2018 11:52 AM
I agree. It's the tires and not the bike. Conventional hybrid tires might be too thin for the mud and rocks. I'd suggest taking it out to Seneca and riding to White's Ferry as a test. That's about 20 miles roundtrip and is muddy for weeks after the last rain.

Hey y'all! If anyone is needing a shuttle to either get around the closure in Brunswick, get through the mud south of Williamsport, or just get anywhere on the GAP or C&O...call Greg from 2 Wheel Escapes! We just used him on the C&O and he was friendly, had an awesome set up with a huge enclosed trailer for bikes and gear, and his prices we're significantly cheaper than all other shuttles we contacted. Greg's number is 240-674-7626. We were so thankful to find his flyer at the Desert Rose in Williamsport. He even brought a car seat for our toddler!!

The Westin or the Drury are closest to Amtrak and easy ride to Three Rivers heritage trail which takes you to start of GAP. I stayed at Cambria on my ride last year. They were very accommodating and reasonably priced thru priceline.
